Felting with sheared animal fibers has been part of human culture since cavemen. This does not hurt the animal. Fibers have microscopic barbs (sheep, alpaca) that create a dense “fabric” when barbs catch each other when agitated. Today, felting has been adopted by the creative world and the possibilities are endless. And fun!
